The date was established by the UN on December 15, 1972, and has been celebrated in more than 100 countries for many years.

Among the ecological dates celebrated at the international level, World Environment Day is unique in its content and essence. The fact that this date is called Ecologists' Day among the people proves that it is the main holiday in the ecological calendar, the main, prelude to all ecological dates.

This date was established at the 27th session of the UN General Assembly on December 15, 1972. At the conference, a new organizational structure was also established - the UN Environment Programme - UNEP. Since then, under the auspices of UNEP, Environment Day has been celebrated annually worldwide.

The question arises: why was June 5 chosen for this event? The answer is simple: it was on June 5 that the UN Conference on Environmental Issues began its work in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

The ecological date, established in accordance with the resolution adopted following the Stockholm conference, is aimed at involving all people living on Earth in activities related to nature conservation, raising in the consciousness of the general public the responsibility for preserving natural resources, their rational use, and the preservation of natural resources for future generations.

By its very nature, World Environment Day is a date aimed at finding solutions to the large-scale and deeply rooted problems facing humanity. Environment Day is not only a professional holiday for ecologists, but also an opportunity to reflect on environmental problems.

In addition, within the framework of the UN, annual days for the protection of water, air, and other natural resources are held. In connection with such dates, many measures aimed at environmental protection are being implemented. Various events are also held around the world on World Environment Day, which indicates that humanity is not indifferent to environmental problems and cares about nature.

As part of the celebration of International Environment Day, the United Nations informs the international community about environmental problems that are relevant on a global scale and calls on the peoples of the world to solve these problems. Over the years, this date has been celebrated in more than 100 countries and today serves as an important foundation for solving environmental problems.
