According to the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a number of violations of legislative requirements in the field of medical waste management have been identified in the city of Tashkent. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 15 percent of medical waste is hazardous. Improper handling of such waste can lead to the spread of various diseases, poisoning, and environmental pollution. During the control measures conducted, it was established that in some medical institutions, hazardous medical waste was mixed with household waste and taken to landfills or disposed of in undesignated locations.
In order to ensure the implementation of the resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated July 17, 2024 No PP-263, the American company "SAYAR LLC" established the foreign enterprise "Sayar green," which is implementing an investment project with a total value of 115 million US dollars. However, due to the fact that medical institutions do not transfer hazardous medical waste to the investor in accordance with the established procedure, this mechanism is not fully functioning. In particular, the total daily capacity of two special installations installed in the city of Tashkent is 12 tons, but in fact, only an average of 3 tons of medical waste enters them daily. As a result, the equipment is used at only 25 percent of its capacity.
Taking the above into account, the "Maxsustrans" State Unitary Enterprise asks medical institutions to strictly comply with current sanitary rules and standards when handling medical waste. In particular, do not allow medical waste to be mixed with household waste, do not throw it into household waste containers, and do not take it to landfills as part of ordinary household waste.
Medical waste, especially hazardous and infectious waste, must be collected separately, stored, transported, and subjected to special disposal in accordance with the established procedure. Furthermore, medical institutions must ensure that medical waste is sorted by type, collected in special containers in accordance with established requirements, and handed over to relevant organizations in the prescribed manner.
